Tip 4: Outliers can be emotional

I’m offering free advice or tips to employers, HR or Internal Comms teams to help them understand their employees’ needs in this new world. For example…

You need to listen well. That means you need to set the stage for people to really express what they’re feeling, whatever they’re feeling.

If you do listen well, then you will hear about a huge range of topics.

Some might shock you, or move you, or correspond with your personal feelings. But if it’s just one voice, if that’s an outlier response, respond to that individual, not the many. Don’t let one opinion skew your thinking.

Similarly, beware of what you hear first – that can often bias how you view the rest of what you hear. Go back, re-read, review comments in a different order – do you read them differently then?

You need to listen hard, review carefully – but be careful you don’t let emotion take over.

Get in touch if I can help.
